In the summer of 2017, my skin screamed! It was a scream of desperation and pain... A scream for help. It manifested with severe inflammations of my already overly sensitive and irritated skin. My psoriasis/eczema was out of control. It had happened before... but never like this.
My skin screamed, and I turned to the usual cortisone cream that had worked so well for me so many times before. But this time was different. The cream made it worse, thinning my skin even more. My inflammations turned into wounds, and my skin was burning. I wanted to cry. I think I shed a tear or two. Suddenly, none of the things I used to do, seem to work anymore. Even my regular body lotion was failing me. I was desperate and lost.
You see, for more than 20 years, I have been managing this psoriasis/eczema with some level of success. I have tried to move away from the cortisone cream and move to natural solutions in the past. However, I could never handle how my skin responded to the change, so I always reverted to the cortisone cream, even though I was reluctant. Those other times, my psoriasis/eczema would get a bit out of control but never like that summer of 2017.

This time, I had no choice but to turn to natural care and stick to it. Google search became my friend. I looked for natural oils that could help hydrate and moisturize the skin and reduce skin inflammation. The process was very experimental. But “necessity is the mother of invention", right? Something needed to work, and Thank God, it did. I came up with a mix of natural oils that helped me start my soothing and healing process. I found my psoriasis/eczema natural skin remedy!
Now... I do not believe that applying oils is the only way to treat your skin. As a matter of fact, my blog is about how I used a more natural approach to NUTRITION and skin care. This makes a big difference.
That said, I can attest from my experience that the oils I used became were life-saving in a moment of crisis. They helped soothe my skin, reduce inflammation and eliminate the itchiness and the pain almost immediately.

Change with a goal in mind
My goal during the summer of 2017 was to find something that would moisturize my skin and reduce inflammation. In the first few weeks of my little experience, I saw some fantastic results using the following 5 oils:
Rosehip
Avocado
Almond
Jojoba
Olive
1. Why these five oils?
In my research, I discovered that Rosehip helps to hydrate the skin, corrects dark spots, and reduces scars. It has both therapeutic and antioxidant vitamins (E, C, D, and B-carotene).
On the other hand, Avocado helps speeding up wound healing, eliminating microbial infections, and reducing inflammation.
And then there is Almond oil, which also has Vitamin E with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It helps tolerate Jojoba oil which holds remarkable qualities (such as not clogging the pores) but can also be too rough for sensitive skin.
Finally, Olive oil is rich in vitamins, is a good moisturizer, and is anti-inflammatory.
2. Carrier oils vs. Essential oils...
I have recently realized that my initial psoriasis/eczema natural remedy was mainly made of carrier oils. Those are extracted from plants and are usually used to carry the essential oils onto the skin. Their moisturizing and anti-inflammatory benefits were perfect to create my very first psoriasis/eczema natural remedy. Essential oils come from the aromatic parts of the plant and can be too strong depending on skin sensitivity. Hence, the use of carrier oils to apply it safely onto the skin.
I was not aware of this fact back in 2017, but I find it quite interesting. Ultimately, I made the natural remedy I needed at that moment.
As time passed and my skin was healing, I added essential oils such as lavender, sweet orange… mainly for their beautiful scents. I also started incorporating castor oil, coconut, eucalyptus, grape seed, tea tree oil, and tamanu nut oil. All were used with caution, as I continuously checked to see how my skin was reacting to the use of newly introduced oils.
3. How did I mix them?
It was very experimental, and unfortunately, I did not track the measurement I used. I remember trying to put fewer jojoba oil drops as it could be too strong for the state of my skin at the time. And for the rest, the quantities of the different oils were more or less equal.

4. How often did I use my oil mix?
Everyday! Remember, at the time, it was a crisis. My cortisone cream and regular body lotion had become entirely ineffective. So I actually needed my oil mix every day, several times a day.
5. When did I start seeing results?
The pain and itch stopped as soon as I applied the oil mix onto my skin, and that was such a relief. It took a few weeks for the inflammation to disappear and several months for the skin discoloration to get fixed.
6. Where did I buy my natural oils?
I bought my oils at the local natural stores. You can check your local online registry to find one closest to where you live. I am sure there are plenty available online as well.
7. Did I use a specific brand?
Not intentionally. I will admit that a few of my first oils were from the Now Food Solutions brand – probably because this is what was available at the stores. That said, I was pleased with the quality of the products.

Final thoughts
What I hope you take away from my little experience is that 1. Research that addresses your unique issue is essential. Without proper research, I could have used natural oils that made my skin irritation worse. Understanding what we put on our skin is critical… and we are so lucky to have so many resources at the tip of our fingers through the internet. 2. Healing takes time. It is necessary to recognize that a natural approach will often require more time to take effect. However, I believe that the long-term results are definitely worth it. You are basically taking care of your skin by understanding what it needs, what it likes, and how to nurture it. 3. It is never too late to try. You can fail and try again. Before that fateful summer of 2017, I tried multiple times to use natural products and failed terribly at it. I was missing appropriate information and resources to guide my learning process. However, I tried again, and again, and finally I found what worked for me... and I am sure you can too!
And that is all for now, my friends :). I hope you find this blog helpful in your journey to healing your skin from psoriasis or eczema. Please share with someone you think would benefit from it. Also, please send me your questions and comments by clicking on Contact below.
